Ming Tombs Introduction:
The Ming Dynasty lasted from 1368 to 1644 totalling 277 years with 16 emperors. All the 16 emperors. Except the second emperor Jianwen, who disappeared without trace, the other 15 emperors all have their own tombs. Emperor Zhu Yuangzhang, the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty made Nanjing its capital and was buried in Nanjing, the Emperor Jintai's Tomb is at Jin Mountain in the western suburbs of Beijievity Mountain in Jundu Mountain Range, north of Beijing.
The site of the Ming Tombs was chosen with the greatest care, with geomancy or Fengshui in Chinese taken into account. (The location of a house or tomb, supposed to have an influence on the fortune of a family.) Therefore the Jundu Mountain was choose by the geomancer,
Why has Dingling Tomb been opened while others not?
Because we don't have enough museums to house these cultural relics unearthed for the time being. China is a developing country; we don't have enough money to excavate ancient tombs. And if we excavate an ancient tomb, we will find a lot of relics, and have to preserve them well. However, the problem is that it is difficult for us to protect these unearthed relics in a scientific way. Also we have some problems to locate the right place to start the excavation of a tomb, especially a mausoleum.
Strict system for designating graves in Old China Society
In old China society, there was a strict system for designating graves, it was stipulating that the Tomb for emperors was called Ling (mausoleum), for princes and nobleman called Zhong (tomb), for sages called Lin (forest) and for common people called Fen (grave).
