Beijing Hutong Tours
Hutong Introduction:
Hutongs are actually the narrow streets and alleys. The word "Hutong" is a Mongolian word, which means the "water well". Now the word "hutong" is used to refer to the neighbourhoods.
The Hutong was originated in Yuan Dynasty, and increased to 7,000 Hutongs in Qing Dynasty. The urban planning in Yuan Dynasty is very strict, the trend of Hutong is often to due east or due west. The longest Hutong in Beijing is 6.5km, while the shortest is about 10 meters, and the narrowest Hutong is only 0.7 meters, people who are a little fat can't pass it through.
With the fast development of the city, many hutong have been demolished to make way for building high rises. Without these hutong, the memory of the traditional life and culture in Beijing will disappear. Therefore, the city has set aside designated parts of downtown Beijing as off-limits to urban renovation. These areas include the neighbourhoods around the Forbidden City, Beihai Park and Lama Temple, Experts worry that urban renovation is likely to break the traditional fabric of the city, making it difficult for the younger generations to fathom the life of Beijing.
